Epic swell hits Maui

The past two days have been amazing on Maui. We got some really good waves and I think it was probably the best swell we've got all winter. All the boys were on it from the Maui legends to the up-and-coming groms. Everyone was ripping and it was good times for sure. Monday, March 5, Kahului Harbor was really fun with glassy conditions. It was a great warm up for the next days session. Tuesday, March 6, the SW winds came and it cleaned everything up with offshore conditions and I knew which spot would be going. Ledges was firing. This day was the best waves Maui got all winter. So many barrels and ramps were shared and everyone lost their voices from yelling and amping so much. haha:) Memorable times for sure! BBQ times

Last night Robin wanted to BBQ some burgers somehow so we got some burgers, made the fire, cruised, and enjoyed some delicious burgers with our family. I'm back home on Maui from my North Shore 2012 winter season. Even though I didn't do well in the Pipeline contest, I feel like this was a very productive winter for sure and I had a bunch of good times cruising with my good friends from all over the world and from Oahu and the outer Islands. Congratulations to Jeff Hubbard for winning the pipe comp in probably some of the best waves I've seen for a Pipeline contest. Also, to Matt Holzman for winning the wave of the contest and Sacha Specker for winning the DK division. Everyone was ripping and I was stoked to watch it live for sure. I've also been filming with Richard Lornie from Chout films and we got some cool clips so keep an eye out for my TURBO 2012 North Shore winter podcast which will be out in 4 weeks or so. I'll be cruising Maui zones for 3 weeks enjoying time with my family, gf, and friends until I'm headed off to Australia for the Box comp. Shea Sevilla and Kahekili Labatte both got photos of them ran in the new Australian Riptide Magazine and Nic Drose was on the front page of the local Maui News Paper yesterday. I was super stoked on all of the shots and more amped to see them in the mags and on the front page.

Super small, but fun Harbor yesterday. There's about 1,001 backflips in this clip somehow. Check it out. It's from Klotwar Media and this is what he had to say about this clip, "This is the start of a new series of films presented by Klot War Media. It'll feature riders from all over the globe. Basically who ever is in Town at the time. Progressional experimental manuevers on a bodyboard followed by some erratic and classic commentary is what to expect. Just got a bunch of goodies from my board sponsor TURBO Bodyboards for this 2012 North Shore Hawaii season. This is one of my new board color combos for 2012/2013. Richard Lornie from Chout Films does it again. He just released his new movie called "Chout The World". If you haven't seen it yet, you are missing out. This film features Bodyboarders from all over the world. Oahu, Maui, Mexico, Australia, and The Canary Islands are the destinations where you can watch some of the top guys in our sport kill it! Personally, I love the whole movie. If you watched Richard Lornies first film called "Chout" then you know what's in store with this new movie. There is not one dull moment in this film. Sunset times with Robin

Yesterday afternoon Robin and I got some plate lunches from "Da Kitchen", water, drinks, and my Gopro and watched the sunset and cruised on the beach somehow. It was good times and we saw lots of whales cruising allkine zones as well. Being home feels great and I enjoy every second I'm here. I'm thankful that I live in such a beautiful place with my amazing gf, family, and friends. I couldn't ask for more :) Life is good! aloha and mahalo

Last Friday DK Wars came to Maui somehow. Christopher Taloa and crew put on an epic event and it was cool to see all the boys ripping it up on the knee at Pakuz. Maui legends such as Chado, Wizard, Landlord, Pilot, and Evan Kaaihue also showed up and put on a show. Also, a bunch of groms, locals, and outer island DKers where ripping for sure. I participated in the team category, but we somehow lost. Congrats to team Family Affair for winning the team division and Evan Kaaihue and Cole for winning the individual category. Las Vegas Vacation

My girlfriend Robin and I went on a mini vacation this past week. We left last Thursday and came back this past Tuesday 1-24-12. We cruised the strip, gambled, watched a Cirque du Soleil(Zummanity) show, went to the Hoover Dam, and cruised The Grand Canyon in the snow somehow. We had a blast and it was nice cruising with Robin in Vegas because it was her first time there and she will be heading to the Navy sometime this year. Our highlight of our trip was watching the Cirque du Soleil performance, but we also had a good time at The Grand Canyon. The visibility was pretty bad at the Canyon, but it was cool to be there while it was snowing. I never had the right kinds of clothing for snowy weather so I was freezing for sure. Anyway, we had an awesome time in Las Vegas and I couldn't be happier spending it with my love for sure :) aloha and mahalo! Here are some photos from our trip.

My good friend David Phillips https://www.facebook.com/dphils came over from his home island to catch a few waves as well. Shea Sevilla was shooting with Dphils video camera and captured a bunch of sick clips. Everyone was ripping and I was stoked to finally get some big rampy waves. Tanner McDaniel visits Maui

12 year old ripper grom Tanner McDaniel from Kauai came to visit Maui this past weekend. He was staying at my place and he had a good time for sure. It was his first time bodyboarding here and he competed in the Paia Beach Fest. He also got to surf some good Kahului Harbor and Honolua Bay which was epic! Tanner ended up placing 1st in the Menehune Division and 2nd in the Juniors. The Paia Beach Fest was a warm up contest for him because he will be back for the USBA regionals which will be held in March. One more thing, I was super stoked to see so much groms ripping this past weekend at the contest. Maui is holding so much potential for sure. I have had so much great memories of competing at the beach fest over the years and I am stoked to see it going strong! Mahalo to all of the staff at Paia and sponsors for keeping this contest going. This past Friday my aunty and uncle got married. It was awesome and a beautiful evening for sure. They have 4 awesome sons and I am very happy for them. Robin shot all of the wedding photos and they came out amazing. Today Robin and I went bodyboarding at our favorite spot, Olowalu. There were some fun waves and it was nice and sunny. Somehow Robin tried a 360 and a rollo, but didn't land them. It was awesome to see her try those moves. She's getting better and better every time we go. Good times on Maui.

It's been good times on Maui this past weekend for sure. My staph is gone, there's fun waves, went ballroom dancing for the first time, and cruised with my longtime friend Molly in Lahaina somehow. Robin, my mom and pops, and I went ballroom dancing this past Friday somehow. It was my first time and I had a really fun time for sure. I even learned how to do the Waltz dance. haha tanks ah. On Saturday, my friend Molly came over to Maui for her friends wedding which wasn't till Sunday. So she cruised with Robin and I in Lahaina zones. We had a good time swimming at Kapalua, eating lunch, and getting some shave ice at Ululani's. It was cool to hang out and catch up with her for sure. Lastly, we've finally been blessed with some decent winter swell. I haven't booged for over 2 weeks and it felt amazing being back in the water and catching that first wave. Thanksgiving is probably the best time of the year for me for sure. Every year my pops and family deep fry turkey's and it's amazing. The night before Thanksgiving we inject the turkey's with this secret sauce and let them marinate over night. Then Thanksgiving day we deep fry all of the turkey's. It's delicious:) I love thanksgivings! Other than eating lots of good food and deserts, I mostly enjoy spending time with my family, gf, and friends. It's the best for sure! I'm thankful for my family, gf, friends, and to be alive. I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving :) aloha and mahalo!

Well I've managed to make it home safely from Puerto Rico. After 3 plane rides, one overnight layover in San Diego, and 30 hours of traveling with I believe is a staph infection in my ankle I'm finally home and I'm loving it. As much as I LOVE to travel, there is no place I'd rather be. Home is my everything and I always love coming home and being with my family and gf.

On my way home I managed to snap this shot of a mouse cruising in the San Diego airport. It was kind of hilarious hearing all of the workers in Starbucks freak out. Probably my highlight of traveling home in the airport. It's winter time in Hawaii now and I can't wait to get rid of this infection and start blasting sections and getting barreled out of my mind. haha. Thank you everyone for the support. I've been in Puerto Rico for almost two weeks now and it's been good times for sure. DUBB won the DK division and also got 2nd in the Open division. Most versatile rider for sure. I've been free surfing everyday somehow. Dphil and I have been filming a bunch and cruising ums. Below are some frame grabs of some free surf sessions. Also, we went bowling one night with the boys and I ended beating everyone with a 167 score. Stoked! Thanks for the support everyone. Life is good :) aloha and mahalo!

Last night Tanner McDaniel, Dphil, and I got invited by Jason(cool local Puerto Rican) to go night surfing with him and some local Bodyboarders and Surfers. The waves were really fun and it was good times for sure. It was my first time night surfing like that. Big lights, 2-3ft wedges, and off of a pier. It was insane. It was probably one of my highlights so far on this trip for sure. Dphil and I took some video footage and Dphil also shot some cool photos with his new camera. Check the shots below. aloha

New Move in Puerto Rico.

I'm in Puerto Rico right now and I just got knocked from my heat. The waves were really slow and I never really got a scoring wave. I managed to pull my new move on my last wave. I needed a 7.2, but the judges only rewarded me with a 1.6. It's all good though. I thought my hagastand 360 floater was perfectly executed. Stoked. Boogie Nations put together a short clip of my new move during my heat. Check it out. aloha.

Today my pops, mom, Robin and I went fishing out in Lahaina. We launched our boat off of Mala Warf. It was a nice and beautiful day and we managed to catch a bunch of Nabeta for dinner. I somehow caught the biggest Nabeta I've ever seen. We were really excited that I may have broke the record for the biggest Nabeta, but when we came in some local guys told us the record was around 3.4 pounds or something. My Nabeta weighed in at 2.3 pounds which is still an awesome size for sure. I was really stoked! Anyway, it was an awesome day having fun and catching fish with my family. This past Saturday I went fishing with my mom and dad off of Lahaina. I love to fish and it was an awesome day for sure. We trolled for a long time and only managed to catch one little aku somehow. It was more than enough though for dinner. We made sashimi and enjoyed it for sure. Guy hags never caught anything, but still enjoyed fishing with my parents. I took my GOPRO out today at this fun spot and got a couple of cool barrels. This wave is really fast and bumpy and I was pretty happy to get some clips somehow. I'm still learning on which place to mount my GOPRO on my board which will have the best angles for barrels and airs. I did a couple of flips as well today with my GOPRO and they never came out that great. I guess it just takes a lot of time in the water with it and see which clips come out the best with the best mounting zones on my board. Today my girlfriend Robin and I went Bodyboarding. It was her first time Bodyboarding with fins and she was really excited to catch some waves. We went out at Olowalu and it was about 1ft. I was pretty impressed that she did really well for her first time, but seeing her really happy and stoked made it even better for sure. This past weekend my family and I went to Hana to relax and share some good times together. My brother Jonah is leaving for the Navy this Sunday so we wanted to enjoy family time together. My parents rented out this awesome place for us and we played board games, cards, drank, and ate some amazing food. We also went swimming at a very cool zone, but we mostly just hung out at the place and cruised. Robin and I went night fishing one night and we somehow caught a fish. It's been a while since I went night fishing and we were stoked to catch a little Cardinal fish(rubbish fish). Family means everything to me and this past weekend in Hana was one of the best vacations I've had with my family for sure. I wouldn't be the person who I am today without my family. Love your family! aloha! Life is good :)

This past Friday and Saturday was the world premieres of "Shacks and Shakas" and they went off. The first one was at Charleys Paia for the 21 and overs and Saturday was at Iao Valley and this premiere was for the youth plus it was free. There were great turnouts for both premieres and it was good times for sure. I just wanted to say thank you to Marcus Rodrigues and Mike Kini for putting together one of the best Bodyboarding films I've ever watched and also supporting all of the Bodyboarders. Virginia Beach Somehow.

This past weekend Nic Drose and I drove to Virginia Beach from New Jersey. We were already in New Jersey and I was planning a road trip to Virginia Beach to visit my brother Josh, Mary, Alyza, Tasha, and Travis. My brother guys moved there about 4 or 5 months ago and Travis is stationed there in the Navy with his wife Natasha. The drive was about 7 hours and 30 mins each way. It was a long drive, but well worth it. We got to my brothers place at 3am Saturday morning. On Saturday we all ended up going to the Outer Banks for some fun boogie sessions, cruising, BBQing, and having good times. I was really amped to see some fun 2ft peaky waves. We had a great time bodyboarding, eating some grinds, having a couple of beers, and enjoying family time. The next day we ate some lunch at The Jewish Mother. My friend pro Bodyboarder Ricky Miller owns the place with his family and invited us to come over and try the food. The food was really good and it was cool to catch up with Ricky. If you live in the Virginia Beach area you should try out his restaurant for sure. So much good food for reasonable prices. After eating lunch we cruised the Virginia Beach boardwalk. It was cool to see and hang out for sure. Nic and I ended up leaving Sunday night around 8pm and got back to Newark, NJ around 4am Monday morning just in time to catch our flight back home to Maui. I wish I could've spent more time with my brother guys, but I know i'll be back soon for sure. I'm at home now and loving life. Life is good :) aloha

The 2011 Jenks Pro “ DAVID HUBBARD SWEEPS THE USBA AT SEASIDE PIER”

Drama was the name of the game today with a change of events that stunned the solid bodyboarding crowd on hand. August 30, 2011 started off like any other bountiful late summer day in New Jersey, however the one major difference was that the Bubbakoo’s Jenks Pro was in town and David Hubbard flew in to Newark with one thing on his mind, take home the national title. Jeff Hubbard, his brother and seven times USBA national title holder, was not about to hand it to his younger brother and had flown in the day before from Portugal to protect not only his national title but his Jenks Pro 2010 title.

The heavily Hawaiian field of pro’s were greeted with a mix of swells with left over’s from hurricane Irene and a new groomed swell from Tropical Storm Jose which was camped out just off of Bermuda. The Jenks Casino Pier surprised the riders and crowd with 3-5 foot groomed lefts and rights with heats starting at 8am. With Jeff Hubbard leading the tour at the start of the Jenks Pro it seemed an uphill battle for Jacob Romero and David Hubbard his brother as Jeff’s momentum on the world tour seemed to carry over to the Jenks Pro (Jeff currently leading the IBA World Tour). Jeff had won his first heat hands down as did David and Jacob, making things interesting heading into the quarter-finals. East Coast locals such as New Jersey’s Chuck Guarino (Monmouth Beach) and Jason Bitzer (Manasquan) alongside Florida’s Dan Worley all used local knowledge to keep the traveling pros on their toes and progressing into the later rounds. Also, newcomer, Kahelili Labatte (Maui) was on fire, blazing through the early rounds.

Now into the main event, it was in full effect pressure and points towards the final USBA standings is what was on all the riders’ minds. Jeff Hubbard opened up the quarters strong with a set wave spin to air roll combo. However, Kahelili Labatte turned up the heat with a dark horse performance using clean back flips to take out Hubbard, the seasoned vet. Jacob Romero eased through his quarter final as did David Hubbard and with Jeff out of the event it was David and Jacob with the two highest chances for the USBA 2011 Title. However, Trevor Kam (Oahu, Hawaii) had been quietly building a campaign heat by heat and realized that if he won the Jenks Pro and if David and Jacob placed anywhere but first or second in the event, he could still win the title. This meant the semi finals were to be treated as finals and every second was more pressure filled than the next.

Kahelili , David, Jacob and Trevor all progressed making it an all Hawaiian final at the New Jersey Shore. Seaside Casino Pier held into the afternoon with light winds and peaking conditions. David Hubbard, aka DHUBB, went to work off the bat and even though all the riders put in valiant efforts, Dave’s lowest score was marginally higher than even the second place rider’s best score. DHUBB seemed to leaving nothing to chance and bettered his chances every wave he caught with three separate amazing combos using the criteria of outside maneuver to inside maneuver to really please the judges. 360’s to back flips were his weapons of choice and the competition was left deflated, with David to be chaired up by brother Jeff and fellow Kauaian ripper David Phillips. When David finally landed in front of the cameras for an interview, he knew he had made the history books to be the only one to ever take out his own brother in seven years.

To cap things off, DHUBB sealed his 4th national drop knee title placing second in the Bubbakoo’s Drop Knee division. Dan Worley narrowly beat DHUBB making The Bubbakoo’s Jenks Pro his second Drop Knee win in 7 years entering the event. Brian Stoehr was happy with his result, taking second in the USBA National tour and third at the Bubbakoo’s Jenks Pro with David Phillips rounding out the Jenks Pro final.

The Zicatela Pro has finished and Jeff Hubbard took care for sure. This event was one of the craziest events i've ever witnessed and some of the biggest waves for sure. Jeff was behind in the heat with about 5 mins or so left and he did the biggest invert to secure his win. Congratulations to Jeff Hubbard and this win puts him into 1st place on the IBA. I feel that he'll bring the title back to Hawaii for sure. We will see. stoked!

After having a shocker heat in the trials. I've been working with a couple of filmers to get some footage for a Mexico podcast. I've been bodyboarding everyday and I've got a bunch of clips already. I still have a couple more days left in Mexico and the forecast is looking insane so hopefully I can get more somehow. The frame grabs below are from my friend Charley Chaplet and this brazilian guy.

Here is a photo of me with a strawberry on my forehead. I ended up going head first right into the sand on the second day I was here. It shows you how powerful Mexico is. strong.

Cool Off The Wall sequence.
